Fantastic season of a fantastic show - leading up to best finale ever
Supernatural is one of the great undiscovered treasures of TV - certainly in the UK. It has everything - action, humour, shocks, a brilliant soundtrack, great character development, and a level of ambition in terms of storytelling that is rarely seen. But at its heart it is a story about love, loyalty and family. The central characters are brothers, Dean and Sam, and their wonderful relationship is the heart of this show. If you have never seen Supernatural, go back to season 1, and start from the beginning. I promise you will be immediately hooked and you won't regret it.
Season 4 was top quality throughout, but I found it bleak viewing. The story was very dark, and there was a distance between Dean and Sam that I didn't enjoy watching. What a turnaround in s5. The story is still dark, but relationships are healing, the character development is believable and extremely moving, and some of the fun is back despite the impending apocalypse.
This DVD set contains some of the best episodes Supernatural has ever done (and there are over 100 episodes). The first half of the season is good, but it really gets into gear in the second half. From Abandon All Hope (episode 10) to the end is a fantastic piece of television writing. The characters are fighting for the belief that free will, loyalty, love and family can triumph over destiny and evil, and boy do they fight hard. The build up to the last episode is intense and unrelentingly exciting.
But good as all the episodes are, you have seen nothing until you have watched the season finale. It is quite simply the best constructed, written and acted hour of television I have ever watched. It packed a huge emotional punch - managing to be heartbreaking yet uplifting. I don't want to spoil it - so I will simply say 'buy these DVDs and watch it for yourself'. You won't regret it. And thank goodness there will be a season 6!
Brilliance
This is the best TV show ever and this season doesn't disappoint. The end was obviously changed (from Kripke's original vision) for the purposes of a season 6 but it is still fantastic.
The writing is wonderful, how they mix the intensity of what's going on week after week with fantastic one liners and the emotion in the relationships between the characters is fantastic.
The acting is also second to none (Jared, has his 'overacty' moment when Sam's 'doing his thing' but imagine how you'd feel for hours on end holding your hand up to nothing!! He comes into his own and shows some real talent towards the end of this season) and the subtle expressions (mainly of Dean/Jensen) and silent exchanges between characters is fabulous. The addition of Castiel in season 4 came against harsh criticism by some but I think he's a wonderful addition to a long running series and takes some of the pressure off the brothers - stopping it becoming entirely about them all of the time.
Just brilliant. I don't like telling people good things about it because I want to keep it culty but I have to defend my favourite show ever against any naysayers.
If you liked seasons 1-4 then you'll like this.
Keep the faith and pray for a perfect season 6.
I started watching Supernatural a while go. I saw Season One in a store and brought it without ever watching the show beforehand. However I became hooked straight away and couldnt wait to get the next season. I have watched all of the previous seasons. One thing I love about Supernatural is that it just keeps getting better and Season Five is the best season so far. The relationship with the brothers is one of the best written and well acted relationships I've ever seen on TV. Season Five starts just as powerful as season four finished. My favourite episodes of this season are the one where the boys go to heaven in search of god, Abandon all hope which is one of the saddest episodes ever and finally the 100th episode with Dean questioning his belief in everything was well written. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are amazing actors and way too under rated.
